Meet Courtney, a Lead ABA Therapist!

Each month we will be highlighting one of our amazing caregiver members. This month we chat with Courtney, a Lead ABA Therapist. She joined Synapse Sitters with an open mind and just wanted to check it out. Read on to learn more about Courtney and her journey within the special needs community and connecting with an amazing family.

Thank you for all you do Courtney!

How did you get involved helping within the special needs community?

“In undergrad I volunteered at PALS a therapeutic riding facility in Bloomington, Indiana. One of my learners was diagnosed with Autism and he was the most fun kiddo ever! Being with him and seeing him progress was the highlight to my week! After I graduated I knew I wanted to continue working with kiddos and the world of ABA just fell into my lap one day! I have never looked back!”

How did you hear about Synapse Sitters and what made you want to join?

“I met the founder of Synapse Sitters while working at an ABA clinic in Indianapolis! I knew I wanted to help more families who needed the extra help! I logged into the Synapse Sitters website with an open mind and began looking through posts for families needing a little help. It did not take me long to find a family that seemed to check all the boxes for me! I met with the family for an “interview” and to see if I was a good fit for their son! Since that day of meeting them I have been babysitting for this family twice a week for the past two years! If it wasn’t for Synapse Sitters I would not have found this family and I could not imagine not knowing them and their son!”

Are you a respite caregiver? If so, tell us how you got started. If not, is this something you would consider? Why or why not?

“I currently am not a respite caregiver, but I am not opposed to being one!”

What do you find to be the most rewarding part of being a caregiver and connecting with families who have loved ones with special needs?

I LOVE being able to see the kiddo I babysit for grow and become like a little brother to me! Being able to be a part of this kiddos life and progress is amazing. I also feel very fortunate to have found a family through Synapse Sitters that I mesh so well with and know that the family trusts and respects me.”

Do you have a caregiver hack or advice?

“My caregiver advice would be to show your true self! Be fun and entertaining for the child! Families love to see that you are actually interested in their child and playing with them!  Also ALWAYS ask questions!”

What is something fun that you like to do in your free time?

“In my free time I like to hang out at the lake in the summers and in the winter I enjoy binge watching Netflix!”

What is one thing that you can’t live without?

“One thing that I could not live without would be ICED COFFEE not matter the weather!”

Anything else that you would like to share with our community and families?

“One thing I would like to share with everyone is to take the plunge! You will find the perfect fit! It might take time but it will be worth it!”
